What Will You Be Doing to Improve Your Life in 2017?

A new year approaches. I suspect many people will be glad to see the back of 2016 and will look forward to 2017 on the premise it can’t be any worse. But for all that the year about to end has brought tragedy, heartache and despair to many, what will you be doing to make your life happier in 2017?
New Year resolutions will be tripping off the tongue of many as the bells approach this weekend. Particularly as the festive period is now on the home straight and the realisation that too much food and alcohol has been consumed; the oft-repeated pledge to give up the fags will be taken again on 2nd January; and the much-used ‘I’m definitely going to get a new job next year’ is, to use a social media phrase, ‘trending’ again.
Sadly, as is so often the case, these pledges are usually thrown away along with the Christmas tree and cards during the cold, dark month of January. The winter blues set in and ‘you’re not really in the mood for change right now’.
We are driven by habit. What we are used to doing on a daily basis, week in, week out until another year reaches its climax is our comfort zone. Although many people want to change their habits and therefore improve their lives, they are wary of doing so as they are stepping outside their comfort zone.
How often have you heard these words?
‘I need to lose weight. I’ll start the diet once New Year is out of the way’
‘I’m too stressed out right now to stop smoking but I will do it. Soon’
‘I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep for ages but I’ll just have to cope’
‘My family are always on at me about my irrational fear of spiders/mice/flying (add any phobia you wish here) but I promise I will do something about it in the New Year’
These words are repeated often at this time of the year but so many people don’t follow up their honourable intentions. Therefore, another year passes and they carry the same regrets and unresolved issues with them. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Imagine what your life could be like if you could harness the power of your habits for the better?
Imagine yourself as the subject of a television documentary. Think of yourself having achieved the targets you set. Look at the television screen and see the new you; that of someone who has lost weight; stopped smoking; rid yourself of that unwanted phobia or habit. See yourself as someone who has reached their fullest potential. Someone who has finally changed their unwanted habits and now has a full, healthy and successful life.
Are you thinking ‘Nah, it just doesn’t happen to me’? Or are you thinking ‘Actually, this fella has got me thinking’?
Ask yourself what is it about your life you want to stop? What habit do you have that gets you thinking ‘I wish I didn’t do this’? Think about this for a few moments. Have you tried other methods but, so far, all else has failed?
Hypnotherapy can help you get rid of these unwanted habits. Your old habits are replaced with new ones which will improve your life.
Hypnosis is an altered and heightened state of awareness that is sometimes referred to as a trance state. But you are not put to sleep. Unlike stage show hypnotists, during hypnotherapy you are fully conscious and aware at all times. You will never be asked to do anything you don’t want to do – so there will be no flapping around the room believing you are a chicken!
Most of us slip in and out of trance states throughout the day in everyday life. Has anyone ever said to you ‘Hey – you’re away in a dream!’ in an attempt to get your attention? When you day-dream you are at your most relaxed and comfortable. This is often when the best ideas ‘pop’ into your mind – they certainly do in my case!
You may be aware there are two parts to the mind, the conscious and the subconscious. Many therapists use the term ‘unconscious’ instead of ‘subconscious’, and many describe the workings of the mind in great detail. My explanation is very simple:
The Conscious
You are aware and in the present with your conscious mind. It’s the part of your mind that reasons and makes decisions and choices. It acts as a filter to thoughts and suggestions, deciding whether to keep them in the forefront of your mind, or put them ‘on hold’, or to dismiss them altogether. When a thought or suggestion is put ‘on hold’, it goes straight to the subconscious where it is filed away.
The Subconscious
The subconscious is a container for your thoughts. Amongst other things, it houses all the information your conscious gives it to store, like memories and things it can’t deal with immediately.
Hypnotherapy is about retraining your subconscious mind to act like your conscious mind and thereby overcoming issues that may affect your day-to-day living.
So, dear reader, if you are someone who wants to lose some weight or stop smoking but find your willpower evaporates after a few weeks; if you feel a distinct lack of self-esteem or self-confidence; if you are someone who has a phobia whether this is of spiders, wasps, general ‘creepy-crawlies’; or even if you’re thinking about going on holiday to sunnier climes but have a fear of flying – contact me to arrange an appointment. Weight Loss Going 'Exceptionally Well'

Client R wished me a Happy Christmas after our session this morning. He came to see me in September wanting to lose some weight. he had tried every kind of diet in recent years and while he usually started of well, his willpower would soon wane and he would be back to square one.

During our initial consultation session in September, R rold me he had tried hypnotherapy before but it didn't work. But he took advantage of my free consultation and he agreed to give Mind Generating Success a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gaines (if you'll pardon the pun)

His aim was to lose three stones in weight.

Now, less than three months on, he has lost almost two stones in weight - and will return to see me in the New Year wholly confident he will come through the excesses of the festive period unscathed. He has now changed the way he thinks about food; his eating habits; his snacking and eating when he wasn't hungry - it was just something to do.

People will have different reasons for wanting to lose weight. Depending on their reason for wishing to lose weight and information provided during the initial consultation session, suggestions for weight loss may include
  • Visualising the body you want
  • Imagining how you will feel with your new look and, as a consequence, new health.
  • Imagining yourself reaching that goal effortlessly. No pills, just mental thoughts.
  • Seeing how much you will have improved from when you begin hypnotherapy.
  • Imagining how energised and confident you will feel.
  • Realising, through hypnotherapy, that the more you exercise, the endorphins physical activity release means the more you will want to exercise, the easier it will become to do so.
  • Whenever you get the urge to eat something unhealthy, or eat when you're not hungry, imagine not reaching your goal and think about how that will make you feel.
Visualisations like these – and there are many possibilities - are designed to empower you so that you can take control of your choices. With weight loss hypnosis you will learn to enjoy the taste of healthy food and stop craving sugary, fatty foods which you already know are unhealthy for you but you fall to temptation anyway.

R told me today he feels hypnotherapy this time around has gone 'exceptionally well'. He has already told his friends and family and the word is spreading fast.

Do you want to emulate R's success? Want to lose weight, particularly once Christmas and New Year is over? Why not contact me for a free consultation. After this, we can decide together the best way to enable you to achieve your goals.

Overcoming the Fear of Injections

I was making small conversation with someone the other day (I like to think of myself as a sociable kind of chap) and she mentioned she had just made an appointment with her dentist for the following day as her back teeth were ‘giving her a bit of jib’. Although I had never met this person before, I could tell from her manner she was clearly petrified of the prospect. She offered the fact ‘she was terrified of needles’ by way of confirming this fact.

This was an open door for me to go through and tell her about my profession as a hypnotherapist.  I explained to her how hypnosis could perhaps help her deep-rooted fear of needles.

‘W’ was unsure of when her phobia begun but she remembered feeling anxious as a child, around the age of 10, when she went to visit the school dentist. ‘W’ agreed to come to see me to ascertain what hypnotherapy could do for her. After the initial consultation, when I discovered more about what made her relax, I explained that the aim would be to discover the origin of her fear.

She explained she was the child of a one parent family and her mother could not afford to have her treated by a private dentist. Therefore, she went to the school dentist – a free alternative but, as most people are aware, there’s no such thing as a free lunch (or free filling) While the school dentist usually did an efficient job, his methods were somewhat lacking in patient care (this was the early 1970s after all) The needles he used to free her mouth were of the humongous variety (her words, not mine) and the piercing pain she felt remained with her until now.

After being taken into a deeply relaxed state, I began to discuss ‘W’’s past with her. She told me more about what happened with the school dentist in more detail.

I asked her if the experience she had of going to a private dentist now, forty years later, was the same. She said it wasn’t, the treatment she received was first class. She said she felt at ease once her mouth was frozen and her present dentist was very professional and caring. I asked her if the process of getting the injection was the same as it was four decades ago. She replied it wasn’t and that her dentist today was very gentle; in fact when she closed her eyes when the injection was being given she barely felt a thing.

Despite her dentist of today being very professional, it was clear ‘W’s subconscious mind remained steadfast in the early 1970s. She still associated the very idea of going to the dentist with large needles and pain, even though this was no longer the case.

Through bespoke scripts, tailored to ‘W’s personal circumstances, I was able to help ‘W’ think differently about going to the dentist. In fact, I helped ‘W’ think differently about injections in general. She was due a blood test at her doctor a few days after her first session with me. When I asked her how she got on at her next visit she told me she didn’t feel anxious at all.

When ‘W’ went for her next dental appointment, I asked her how she felt. She said that, this time, she wasn’t anxious at all before going and while waiting in the dental surgery she was no longer trembling with fear. Her approach about her visits to the dentist had changed and it no longer dominated her life by creating a state of high anxiety. While she wasn’t quite at the stage of looking forward to going to the dentist – who does? – her feelings of anxiety had reduced substantially.

If you are suffering from a fear that you believe might stem from a bad memory, then hypnotherapy is a great way of recalling that memory and allowing you to rid yourself of it.

The Cost of Smoking

How much do you spend on cigarettes? Any idea? If you add it up over a year it may startle you.

The average cost of pack of 20 cigarettes is around £8.00. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day that's nearly £60 per week; or £250 per month. Put it another way, nearly £3,000 a year.

Think what you could do with an extra three grand in your pocket each year. And that's before you consider the health benefits.

Do you still want to carry on smoking? Or do you want help to give it up?

If it's the latter get in touch with me here - today.

Mind Generating Success Website Update

About Mind Generating Success

Hypnotherapy is a skilled verbal communication, used during hypnosis, which helps direct a client’s imagination in such a way as to bring about intended alterations in sensations, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour. The process begins with the initial consultation session - which is FREE - where I will ask you why you have considered hypnotherapy and what it is you want hypnotherapy to help you with. I will ask you questions about about your general health and lifestyle and what things help to relax you. From information obtained during this consultation session, I shall create a bespoke script for use during the hypnotherapy sessions. I shall also answer any questions you may have. Together, we will agree on the changes or goals that are desired. You will never be asked to do anything you don't wish to and you will be in control at all times.

During the hypnotherapy sessions, I will get your mind and thought in a relaxed condition - you will be so relaxed I will talk to your subconscious mind and try to implement the changes you wish.

Hypnotherapy can be applied to a wide range of medical, dental and psychological problems. Areas of application include anxiety and stress conditions, weight control, addictive behaviours (including smoking, alcohol and substance misuse) and confidence issues. It is also used to enhance performance in several areas such as sport and public speaking.

My hypnotherapy and counselling business is MGS. This stands for Mind Generating Success – and MGS is also my initials! My aim to be one of the leading hypnotherapists and counsellors in east central Scotland with a reputation for being professional, trustworthy, reliable and accessible.

My website and email address is below - you can leave a message on my mobile phone at  any time, day or night.

Hypnotherapy - What's It All About?

Have you ever tried to lose weight but found that diets don’t really work - and you blame your lack of willpower? Or you really want to give up smoking but, again, find that nothing works? Are the words ‘I’ve tried but I just can’t do it’ familiar to you?

Do you feel your self-esteem is quite low in these difficult times and you are lacking in confidence? Perhaps you have a phobia with a fear of spiders, wasps etc or you’re in desperate need of a holiday - but can’t face flying? Do you feel despair because you think nothing helps?

Well, a new business based in the heart of Edinburgh may be able to help. Mind Generating Success can show you a perfectly natural process to overcome issues such as these mentioned above. And the beauty is that hypnotherapy – the power of the mind – can help you thanks to your mind power!

The reaction of many people when I tell them I am a fully qualified hypnotherapist is somewhat inevitable. They wear a look of surprise, there’s an audible gasp and a somewhat predictable ‘oh, look into my eyes’ reaction whilst waving their fingers in my direction. Given the recent television show Back in the Room on ITV, this is no real surprise. Hypnotherapists can be perceived as magical wizards who sit in a therapy chair dangling a swinging watch, putting people into a trance like state where they lose all control. In reality, hypnotherapists can help people transform their lives – and the client is fully aware and in control at all times.  And if I tell you just how many different issues hypnotherapy can help with you may be surprised.

Hypnosis is an altered and heightened state of awareness that is sometimes referred to as a trance state. Most of us slip in and out of trance states throughout the day in everyday life. Has anyone ever said to you ‘Hey – you’re away in a dream!’ in an attempt to get your attention? When you day-dream you are at your most relaxed and comfortable. This is often when the best ideas 'pop' into your mind – they certainly do in my case!

You may be aware there are two parts to the mind, the conscious and the subconscious. Many therapists use the term 'unconscious' instead of 'subconscious', and many describe the workings of the mind in great detail.

Amongst other things, it houses all the information your conscious gives it to store, like memories and things it can't deal with immediately.

At its most basic, imagine you have a real fear of spiders (okay, I realise some of you won’t need to imagine!) You see a spider crawling across the floor. Your conscious mind - the one which enables you to perform your usual day-to-day tasks such as getting up in the morning, getting dressed, driving the car to work – tells you it’s just a spider, a wee harmless beastie that isn’t interested in you and is probably frightened of you anyway, hence the reason it scuttles furiously across the floor to avoid you. But if your fear of spiders relates back to something that happened in your childhood, your subconscious mind will immediately refer to that. And it is you who leaps to the other side of the room. Hypnotherapy is about retraining your subconscious mind to act like your conscious mind and thereby overcoming issues that may affect your day-to-day living.

Once induced into a feeling of total relaxation, I can talk to the subconscious mind and, after a few sessions, help allay a fear of spiders. Hypnotherapy can help people accept spiders for the harmless little creatures they are.

Most people know that hypnosis can be helpful for stopping smoking, losing weight, increasing confidence and treating phobias.  However, you may be more surprised to find that it can help you to pass your driving test or become better at public speaking. Having trouble sleeping? Got a job interview or presentation coming up and feel nerves will get the better of you? Or are you the best man at a wedding or father of the bride and are fearful about your speech?
Hypnotherapy can help all these issues – and more.

Hypnotherapy is a skilled verbal communication, used during hypnosis, which helps direct a client’s imagination in such a way as to bring about intended alterations in sensations, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour. The process begins with an initial consultation meeting during which the hypnotherapist will ask the client questions about previous medical history, general health and lifestyle. They will also ask about things that make them relaxed such as their favourite place in the world to go; happy memories of a special time in their life; favourite pastimes and generally things about what make the client feel happy and relaxed. From this initial consultation, the hypnotherapist creates a bespoke script for use during the hypnosis. The hypnotherapist and client will decide together on the changes or goals that are desired.

Unlike stage show hypnotists, during hypnotherapy you are fully conscious and aware at all times. You will never be asked to do anything you don’t want to do - so there will be no flapping around the room believing you are a chicken!
I was discussing hypnotherapy the other day with a fella who came round to fix a broken tap in my bathroom.

‘Can ye get me tae gie up the fags?’ he asked.

‘I can’t get you to do anything’ I replied. ‘The wish to do something to change your life has to come from you. But if you’re serious about wanting to give up smoking, it’s certainly worth considering hypnotherapy’

I asked him how much money he presently spends on tobacco. He thought for a moment before answering he smokes about 40 cigarettes a day. That works out at around £17 per day, over £120 a week - and a staggering £6,300 per year. I wondered how many other people in Edinburgh and the Lothians smoke 40 cigarettes a day – and, given the current financial climate, how much they could do with an extra £6,000 plus in their pockets. And that’s before one considers the health benefits of giving up cigarettes.

Smoking cessation through hypnotherapy is usually concluded in one or two sessions. To quote my plumber friend, at £90 per session, that’s a drop in the ocean to the amount of money he spends on tobacco.

Of course, it’s not only giving up smoking and weight management issues that hypnotherapy can address.

Ask yourself what you say when someone asks you ‘How are you?’ Is it the standard reply most people offer – ‘Aye, I’m okay, just doing away’?

Is that how you want your life to be? Just doing away?

Are you really, truly happy with your life? Or are there some things you would like to change but aren’t sure how to make these changes or where to start?
There are many people who think like this. In today’s 24/7 instant communication society, a great many people want to change some aspects of their life but don’t know how to do this or who to approach for help and guidance.

So, I hear you ask – how can hypnotherapy help make these changes happen for me?

Firstly, you need to know what changes it is you want to make to your life. Once you do you can contact me and together we can discover the tools and techniques that will bring improvement to the quality of your life – and bring happiness and contentment. Life is too short to accept what we’ve got if we’re unhappy with it.  Change for the better is all about you. When you discover the tools to make those changes then your hopes for a better life can be fulfilled.

Hypnotherapy can be applied to a wide range of medical, dental and psychological problems. Areas of application include anxiety and stress conditions, the aforementioned weight control and addictive behaviours and confidence issues. It is also used to enhance performance in several areas such as sport and public speaking.

Okay, I hear you ask. What can hypnotherapy do for me?

Well, that depends on you. Hypnotherapy gives you time for one of the most important things in your life – you. With relaxing techniques tailored to suit you, you will feel calmer, more relaxed and have a better understanding of your life, needs and aspirations as well as others.

So, dear reader, if you are someone who wants to lose some weight or stop smoking but find your willpower evaporates after a few weeks; if you feel a distinct lack of self-esteem or self-confidence; if you are someone who has a phobia whether this is of spiders, wasps, general ‘creepy-crawlies’; or even if you’re thinking about going on holiday to sunnier climes but have a fear of flying - contact me to arrange an appointment. After a free, no obligation initial consultation, we can decide together the best way to enable you to achieve your goals.

Let's Talk About the Blues...

…So let's have another drink and let's talk about the blues. Blues is about dignity, it's about self-respect, and no matter what they take away from you - that's yours for keeps.

I remember how it was, how every medium - T.V. and papers and radio and all those people were saying: 'you're on the scrap-heap, you're useless', and I remember how easy it was to start believing that. I remember how you'd hear people take it for granted that it was true - just 'cause someone with an ounce of power said so.

And that's a problem now, too many oddballs, too many pocketbook psychologists and would-be philosophers with an axe to grind. But there's a solution, it's not easy, but it's a matter of coming to terms in your heart with situation you're in, a matter of choosing how things go for you and not having things forced upon you.

There are plenty of forces against you, forcing you against your will, your ideals - you've got to hope for the best, and that's the best you can hope for - you've got to hope against hope... I remember something Sal Paradise said, he said: 'the city intellectuals of the world are debauched from the full body blood-of-the-land and are just rootless fools'.

So listen, when the smile, the condescending pat-on-the-back comes and says: 'we're sorry, but you're nothing, you've got nothing for us and we've got nothing for you', you say: 'No', and say it loud: "NO!", and remember, people who talk about revolution and a class-struggle without referring explicitly to everyday life, without understanding what is subversive about love, and what is positive in the refusal and constraint...

The magnificent Pete Wylie who will be performing in Glasgow in November.

There is a solution:

I Really Need to Lose Weight

How many times have you uttered these words ‘I really need to lose weight’?  And how many times have you said, ‘I’ll do it after such-and-such or I’ll wait until after the wedding/holiday/Christmas etc etc’ - but still don’t do anything meaningful about it?

If you've ever tried and failed to lose weight before then you probably know just how frustrating it can be - especially when feelings like stress, low self-esteem and boredom are also issues and can act as an all-too convenient excuse.
There’s a cycle people can fall into e.g. overeating, feeling guilty and dieting again. Then celebrating a small weight loss by ‘treating’ oneself to a cake or chocolate bar and the whole process is triggered again.  Does this sound familiar? Known as 'yo-yo dieting' this cycle can make weight loss difficult to sustain.

So, I hear you ask, how can hypnotherapy succeed where all other methods have failed? A good question, I grant you. However, part of the answer is simple really. While diets, nutrition plans and targets focus on what you eat and how often, hypnotherapy changes how you feel about what you eat. Oh yeah, I hear you ask, perhaps cynically? Well, I can understand your cynicism but read on…
